Congratulations to Year 12 2019 students Aaron Gurd and Luke Brown who are both receipients of Sydney North Schools Sports Association Blue Awards for 2019. Aaron was recognised for his outstanding achievements in Football and Luke for Baseball. The Annual Awards Presentation was held at Hornsby RSL Club on Tuesday 11 February. Aaron and Luke are pictured with our Principal Ms McDowall and Deputy Principals Ms Thompson and Mr Finley, who attended the ceremony with Aaron and Luke - we are very proud of you both!

Music at The Forest!

Class of 2019 HSC Success

Congratulations to our Class of 2019 on their amazing HSC results. There were 39 Distinguished Achievers who received a Band 6 with outstanding levels of achievement across all faculties in the school and some particularly outstanding performances. Emma Beukers is an HSC All-Round Achiever with Band 6 in all of her subjects. Tara Mapstone is a Top Achiever in Course in Hospitality, being ranked in the top 10 of the state for this course.

We are very proud of all our Year 12 students and wish them every success in whatever path lies ahead for them. We also thank our dedicated teachers for all the hard work and guidance they have given to our Class of 2019 throughout their time at The Forest High School.

Continuing our relationship with The Northern Beaches Hospital, our students handed out home-made gifts to patients and visitors on 9th December. Over the last few weeks students have embraced their creative side by designing the gifts - beautifully made cards, gift bags, origami Christmas tree decorations and reindeer bookmarks. The individually named teddy bears made by our Support Unit students were extremely popular in the maternity ward.

Young Leaders of 2020

We are delighted that one of our Year 11 students, Imogen Talintyre, has been included in a new photography exhibition by portrait photographer Nicholas Fiennes called "Young Leaders of 2020". Imogen was among a group of 15 specially selected student leaders from various high schools who were photographed by Nicholas. They were also filmed talking about their views on life in Australia today - topics such as mental wellbeing, recism, climate issues and equality - and about people who inspire them and what they hope to achieve in their future lives.

Imogen said "Everyone has something to give, something they can add and provide value to society. I think if you judge someone or completely disregard someone based on the mistakes that they've made, you're erasing their ability to make amends fo rthat and be better; 'cancel culture' is not something that'll benefit society, or anyone".

The exhibition was featured in The Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday 30th November.

Silver Assembly

Congratulations to those students who received awards at the Silver Assembly on 26 November. Students received certificates in recognition of excellence, effort, achievement and participation in a range of school and extra-curricular activities including the Enrichment Program, School Band, Maths Competitions and Sporting Competitions. Students and parents were also treated to excellent performances from the band and choir. Well done to all the recipients.

Congratulations to Maddi Davies in Year 12 whose Major Design Project has been nominated for consideration for inclusion in Shape 2019, the annual exhibition of a selection of exemplary works from Higher School Certificate Design and Technology, Industrial Technology and Textiles and Design students. Shape 2019 will be on exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum, Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS), Ultimo, Sydney, from 28th February to 3rd May 2020. Well done to Maddi!

Remembrance Day Commemoration

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

2019 Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Award winner

Congratulations to Emma De Zeeuw in Year 12 who is this year's recipient of The Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Award. This award recognises students who demonstrate leadership and teamwork within both the school and the broader community. At the same time, they recognise those who display strong values, such as doing one's best, respect for others and "mateship", that are integral to Australian society. The award is sponsored by the Australian Defence Force. Well done Emma.

Tara and Emma named 2019 Caltex Best All Rounder Award winners

We are delighted to announce that Year 12 student Tara Mapstone is The Forest High School's recipient of the 2019 Caltex Best All Rounder Award, one of Australia's most prestigious secondary school prizes and Emma Beukers from Year 12 is the Caltex Award recipient from The Languages High School.

Tara and Emma join a select group of secondary students around Australia who have received a Caltex Best All Rounder Award for excellence in their studies, on the sports field and for their work in the community. The awards will be presented to Tara and Emma at The Forest High School's Presentation Night on 10th December.

The Forest High School's Principal, Ms Rosemary McDowall, said Tara and Emma were worthy recipients of the nationally-recognised award.

"The award recognises Tara and Emma's contribution across several disciplines and they have both been a wonderful asset to our school and the wide community, setting a terrific example for others to follow" Ms McDowall said.

Caltex Australia Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Julian Segal, said the Australian transport fuels and convenience company was proud to have recognised generations of students like Tara and Emma since the awards began in 1985.

"As a proud Australian company that has been part of local communities for more than a century, we are pleased to acknowledge the outstanding all-round contribution this year's winners have made to their schools and communities, along with their leadership abilities and the good example they set for others"

"I congratulate Tara and Emma and wish them well as they move into the next phase of their life" Mr Segal said.

The Caltex Best All Rounder Award has been presented to thousands of final-year students around the country across its 34-year history. Past winners include children's show actor Emma Watkins (the current 'Yellow Wiggle') from The McDonald College in Sydney, and frisbee world-champion Adrian Gepp (PhD) from Faith Lutheran College in Tanunda, South Australia.

Pierre de Coubertin Award Recipient

We are excited to announce that Year 12 student Matthew Filatoff has been awarded the Pierre de Coubertin Award. This award is named after the founder of the Modern Olympic Games and recognises students who demonstrate academic excellence and sporting prowess whilst exemplifying the Olympic values. Each award recipient must participate in sport and display the Olympic values, in particular good sportsmanship. We congratulate Matthew on this outstanding achievement and recognition.

Huge congratulations to one of our ex-students Lachlan Clarke who graduated Year 12 from The Forest High School in 2018. Lachlan has completed his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and was presented with his award on Friday 13th September at Sydney Town Hall. 2019 Minister's and Secretary's Awards

We are pleased to announce that one of our students and two of our staff are recipients of 2019 Minister's and Secretary's Awards for Excellence. Emma Beukers, Year 12 Sports Captain received the Minister's Award for Excellence in Student Achievement and Stephen Davies Head Teacher TAS and Leslie Pitt PDHPE Teacher both received the Minister's Award for Excellence in Teaching. They were presented with their awards by the Hon. Sarah Mitchell, MLC, Minister for Education at a dinner held at Lower Town Hall on 27th August and hosted by ex-Forest High student Jane Caro. Our Principal Ms McDowall, Deputy Principals Ms Thompson and Mr Finley and Teacher/Librarian Ms Murray also attended the awards.

There are over 600,000 students in NSW and 37 received Minister's Excellence Awards. There are over 60,000 teaching staff in NSW and 28 received Minister's Excellence Awards. We are extremely proud that Emma, Stephen and Les are among this elite group.

Year 12 Aaron Gurd selected for Australian Schoolboys Football Team

Aaron Gurd in Year 12 (pictured back row 3rd from left) has been sensationally selected for the Australian Schoolboys Football Team to tour in the UK in January 2020. After some rigourous trials against CHS, Catholic and Independent schools, a brilliant performance and goal at the final selection trials in Canberra saw Aaron parachute into the Australian squad. He will depart for the UK in January 2020 with the squad for 10 games over 21 days including internationals. On behalf of everyone in the Forest family we wish Aaron all the best in his endeavours.

Year 7 Life in Rome

Year 7 History students have been investigating everyday life in Rome. At the end of one lesson, several students got to dress up in a traditional tunic to understand the simple nature of clothing during this period for the ordinary citizens compared to the more decorative features on clothing for officials such as augurs, (yellow toga), censors (purple toga) and a candidate standing for election (whtie toga). They also reflected on how clothing continues to reflect status within modern society.

Northern Beaches Hospital Visit

Year 10 Child Studies students visited the maternity ward at the Northern Beaches Hospital to complement their studies on Pregnancy, Child Birth and Child Development. They were given a tour of the birthing suites, the maternity ward and the neonatal unit by a nurse educator. There was also the opportunity to visit with some newborn babies in the neonatal unit thanks to some very generous Northern Beaches mums. This opportunity greatly enhanced the students' understanding of these areas of study. Many thanks to the wonderful Northern Beaches Hospital staff who worked with us.

These students had a special meeting with our Principal Rosemary McDowall yesterday for demonstrating outstanding leadership and community spirit. Recognising an issue with some litter escaping into the gardens they organised their own cleanup afternoon to do something about it. We are proud to have such caring and inspiring students.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

The Forest Festival of Lights

Exciting news! The Forest Festival of Lights is back for 2019 and this year we will also be having a Colour Fun Run.

Come along and join us on Friday 30th August from 3pm to 8.30pm.

This wonderful community event is open to the wider Forest community. There will be stalls offering a range of crafts, jewellery and fashion as well as fun activities for those attending. Also a range of food stalls such as a coffee cart, wood fired pizza, paella and BBQ. Entertainment will be provided by our talented students and community artists.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Lunchtime Handball Competition

School spirit hit a new high in Week 4 with the inaugural Teacher v Year 12 Handball Competition. In a tighly contested handball competition held over two action packed lunchtimes the teachers outplayed and outsmarted the Year 12s on Day 1, help greatly by the 80's music to put the Year 12s off their game. The teachers' team were ecstatic with a 2-1 result however on Day 2 the Year 12s came out in force and although the teachers fought valiantly to the end, the Year 12s won 3-0. So, look out Year 12s - you may have won this year, but the teachers are determined to win next year!

National Reconciliation Week 2019

Free Supervisor of Learner Driver Workshop

The Northern Beaches Council is running a free Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers Workshop. An authorised presenter from the RMS will present the workshop. In addition, there will be 3 x $100 Driving Vouchers for HART Driving School as door prizes. This is a great way to help prepare the supervisors of learner drivers when teaching a young person to drive.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Anzac Day Assembly

ANZAC Day was commemorated today at The Forest High School with a Junior and Senior Assembly, where our SRC Leaders from Year 12 and Year 9 led the school in remembrance of our fallen soldiers and those continuing to serve.

A special thank you to Taylor, Wanita and Aiyana for their beautiful rendition of the New Zealand National Anthem, Rhyse and Bailey for their presentation and Terence for his haunting rendition of The Last Post and Reveille.

Thanks also go to Akito who played The Last Post and Reveille beautifully for Balgowlah North Public School at their special assembly this morning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Year 12 receives International Science School scholarship

Every two years the International Science School gathers 140 top science students from Australia and overseas for a two-week residential program of talks by world-renowned scientists, laboratory tours, hands-on activities and social events. This year Emma Beukers in Year 12 was successfully awarded a scholarship to the 2019 ISS that will run in the holidays between Term 2 and Term 3. We congratulate Emma on her continued commitment to academic excellence that has allowed her to be selected for this program.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

School bus service changes

Changes to Route 721n - commencing Term 2 2019

From 29th April 2019 route 721n trip commencing from Seaforth at 8.23am will commence at 8.17am.

This service will go via normal route to Condamine Street, right at Campbell Street, U turn, drop off at Mackellar school, right at Condamine Street then normal route.

Students are reminded of the requirement to 'tap on' and 'tap off' with a valid School or Child Opal card on every bus boarded as part of their journey.

State Transit and Transport for NSW will be closely monitoring Opal cad usage on all school services to ensure buses have been allocated to meet customer demand.

Bringing Easter cheer to The Northern Beaches Hospital

This week students from the SRC have been visiting the Paediatric and Maternity wards at The Northern Beaches Hospital to deliver Easter eggs to patients and give them a small Easter treat. The SRC thank all those students and staff from The Forest High School who kindly donated and also thank the Hospital for again opening their doors to our students and showing them around on their visit.

Our 2017 School Captain Tamika Egan-Walters has been awarded the ICMS Professional Scholarship for 2019 for a Bachelor of Business Management (Fashion & Global Brand Management). Ann Whitelock Courtney-O'Connor, Chairperson of the Aspiring Education Foundation & ICMS Professional Scholarship Program, said "Tamika has been selected for this prestigious award because of an extensive set of criteria that she meets. Those criteria include evidence of displayed leadership, professionalism and being a team player. In addition, she has demonstrated a consistent academic performance, a well-rounded approach to life and a strong set of constructive interests". Tamika received her award at the Scholarship Ceremony held on Wednesday 13th March at the ICMS Campus Castle at Manly. We congratulate Tamika on this great achievement.

Information on school bus incident - 20/3/19

Yesterday, 20th March, one of the buses taking some students to sport at around 1pm had an accident when a car u-turned in front of the bus on the Wakehurst Parkway.

We were informed of the accident by a teacher on the bus travelling with the students and two teachers drove down to be with the students until another bus arrived to bring them back to school. All other interventions were already in the hands of the police and ambulance. All parents were individually notified by phone by administration staff and executive staff. The Department of Education processes were followed for notification to media and criticial incident support was made.

Students arrived back at school with the three teachers on the bus and a very big thank you to them for keeping the students calm at the site and on the way back to school. One teacher and one student were kept under observation at the hospital until 6pm and then discharged.

The driver was not badly hurt but very shaken. The bus driver was noted by the students as doing a great job in controlling the bus and looking after them.

Luckily there were no serious injuries to any person involved in the accident. Some students were emotionally shaken - we gathered them together in the assembly hall to speak with them. Students will be supported today if necessary.

This was an example of staff and students pulling together and making sure everyone was safe under very stressful circumstances.

"Say No to Bullying" Day

The SRC handed out "Say No to Bullying" wristbands and staff wore "Say Something" t-shirts or orange in support of Stymie, our platform to anonymously report incidents of bullying or refer someone needing support.

Lightning strike in school grounds

At 2.40pm today during the storm a lightning strike hit a palm tree at the rear of the bottom car park in the school grounds. The emergency services were immediately called and attended. Students were evacuated from the blocks in the vicinity. The fire has now been put out and no one was injured.

CODE4FUN'S Resume Challenge

Congratulations to Cooper Heriot in Year 10 who was one of three major award winners of CODE4FUN challenge. Cooper took out first prize in a challenge that saw more than 280 students from 43 schools compete. Students were judged on their creativity, originality, coding, design and animation skills. Cooper was one of three first place winners to take home an ASUS laptop. The top 45 students were invited to visit the Microsoft Reactor in the Sydney Start-up Hub. Sydney University Robotics Championships

Congratulations to Adi Sriram who is currently preparing to attend the First League Robotics Championships with Sydney University Robotics Club in Calgary at the end of this term. The FRC is a world-wide competition for high schools. To reach this goal, Adi and his team (and their parents!) have put in many hours of testing and experimenting to come up with their final design. Students work during their holidays and through February to design and build a 70kg robot from scratch, and then compete against other teams and their robots from around the world. The team has qualified to compete in three international events - the first two in Sydney and the third in Calgary, Canada. We wish Adi and his team The Dropbears all the best for the competition.

Year 10 Roddy Dixon receives Blues Award

Congratulations to Roddy Dixon in Year 10 who was presented with a Sydney North Schools Sports Association Blues award on Tuesday 12th February at Asquith Golf Club. This is the highest award for sporting excellence within the Assocation, given to recipients who have performed with distinction in their chosed sport and exhibited exemplary sportmanship, leadership, team commitment and behaviour both on and off the sporting field. Roddy was recognised for his achievements in AFL - last year he successfully trialled for the Northern NSW Regional AFL team and narrowly missed out on being selected for the NSW State team. He is currently a member of the Sydney Swans Academy U16s squad. Roddy was presented with his award by Sarah Laman, a women's National Rugby representative and currently a member of the Warringhah Rats Rugby club. Sarah is an ex-Forest High School student.

Cole Classic swim success for Year 9 students

We would like to congratulate two of our Year 9 students Kimberley and Katelynn Doyle and their older sister Emily who won the top three places in the women's 1km Cole Classic swim on Sunday 3rd February. The swimmers started at Shelly Beach and finished at the southern end of Manly Beach. Kimberley and Emily finished first and second overall with Kimberley winning in an impressive time of 11 minutes 8 seconds. In the 2km swim Emily was placed first and Kimberley came third. We are extremely proud of the girls' achievement. Almost $200,000 was raised for charity at the event and other participants included Olympic champions Susie O'Neill, Cate and Bronte Campbell. We are delighted to announce that School Captain and Year 12 student Zali Van Der Veer is The Forest High School's recipient of the 2018 Caltex Best All Rounder Award, one of Australia's most prestigious secondary school prizes.

Zali joins a select group of secondary students around Australia who have received a Caltex Best All Rounder Award for excellence in their studies, on the sports field and for their work in the community.

The award was presented to Zali at the Year 12 Graduation for her very high academic achievement and for her participation in numerous school events and initiatives including the school musical, The Forest Festival of Lights, Open Night and various charities.

"The award recognises Zali's contribution across several disciplines - she has been a wonderful asset to our school and the wider community, setting a terrific example for others to follow" Ms Rosemary McDowall, Principal said.

Caltex Australia Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Julian Segal, said the Australian fuel and convenience company was proud to have recognised generations of students like Zali since the awards began in 1985. "I congratulate Zali and wish her well as she moves into the next phase of her life" Mr Segal said.

We are very proud to announce that Tara Mapstone in Year 11 has been awarded a Dee Why RSL Academic Scholarship for 2019. The scholarship is open to local students going into Year 12 for the 2019 year of study and students can receive up to $2,000 to assist them in achieving their utmost potential while completing the HSC. Recipients are selected based on their academic performance, contribution to school and community as well as interest and participation in extracurricular activities. Tara will receive her award at an awards function on the 4th December. We congratulate her on this wonderful achievement.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Thursday 27th September 2018 was Year 12 Celebration Day at The Forest High School. The teachers triumphed in the closely contested teachers v students basketball game followed by everyone getting wet 'n' wild on the oval. We wish them well for their studies in the holidays. It is a "One Stop Shop" for your child's needs with their Career Planning, information on HSC and Post School Options and much more. Students can also use it to create and save their resume.

The site is also designed with parents and carers in mind, to provide all the information you may need and the information is constantly changing in these areas.

It is a great resource to keep abreast of current offerings including university/TAFE/private college open days, study sessions, GAP year programs, work experience and jobs.

Canberra Visual Arts Camp - 25/26th July

On Thursday and Friday 26th-27th July, 50 students took part in the inaugural 'Visual Arts Camp'

They travelled to Canberra to visit some amazing venues and exhibitions of painting, sculpture, photography, glass art and digital media. At the National Gallery of Australia their eduational tour included some art making activities and they were excited by the virtual reality artwork 'Terminus' by Jess Johnson and Simon Ward.

They also visited the Canberra Museum and Gallery, National Portrait Gallery and Canberra Glassworks. It was a great trip.

'Meet the Music 2' Night - 4/7/18

On Wednesday 4th July our senior music students were treated to a wonderful night at the Sydney Opera House.

Prolific Australian composer Ross Edwards this year celebrates his 75th birthday. The night opened with a spectacular rendition of Happy Birthday played by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra with all audience members standing and singing to the much loved composer. Definitely a special moment for our students to be part of. For our piano students, the musical highlight of the night was possibly Rachmaninoff's ‘Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini'.

Thank you to the families who made this wonderful experience available for these students. We are all looking forward to the next concert in the ‘Meet the Music 2' series.

Class of 2018 Gala Night - 25/7/18

The Class of 2018 is holding a Gala Concert to raise money for charity at 6pm on Wednesday 25th July in the School Hall

Congratulations to our Year 10 student Nic Seale who was a winner in the Northern Beaches Hospital photography competition with his entry of a photo of Palm Beach.

Nic's photo has now been digitalised by a professional photographer onto banners which will hang in the hospital atrium. There will be an article and photo featured in the Manly Daily soon.

This is a wonderful prize and we are very proud of Nic's achievement.

Year 11 Taronga Zoo Visit - 16/3/18

On Friday 16th March the Year 11 Investigating Science class visited Taronga Zoo for their first significant depth study about observing animal behaviour.

The Zoo gave presentations about ethology - the study of animal behaviour - and a case study of spotted quolls around NSW. The students all chose different animals to perform their observations on and gathered again to watch an interesting show about seal training. The students all enjoyed the day and will be writing up reports about their observations of animal behaviour in class.

Bullying. No Way! Day - Friday 16th March

On Wednesday 14th February the SRC held their annual Valentines' Day celebration.

Love was in the air, and in the cupcakes, and in the roses, and in the song dedications and in the photo booth. Music played throughout the playground - with students dancing and singing along.

SRC members volunteered their Tuesday afternoon to wrap the roses at Ivy&Rose Florist and we thank them for their continued support of our day.

Choir - this year choir will rehearse on Tuesdays at lunch in the music rooms above the school office in D Block. A huge welcome to all of the new Year 7 students that will be joining us tomorrow. Our choir is open to everyone from all years so please don't hesitate to come along and have a sing with us!

Year 7 students meet as a group under the COLA before the end of the school day. Six Head Teachers are rostered on bus duty to supervise and support Year 7 and other students in catching their after school buses.

Head Teachers are also assigned to each bus to ensure safety for students getting onto buses at the school bus stops on Frenchs Forest Road.

If Year 7 students are uncertain about which bus to catch please notify the school with their name so that we are able to assist.

Sun Studios Visit - 13/12/17

For the second year, Sun Studios in Alexandria kindly donated a fabulous Canon Camera as a prize for a photography competition open to all students in our school.

The chosen topic was ‘bliss' and students entered some brilliant photos. The General Manager of Sun Studios, Alan Brightman, asked photographer Graham Monro to assist in the judging of the photos. Students were given a tour of the studios, given a presentation about the studios, enjoyed a yummy morning tea and then the finalist photos were shown, along with a critique of each photo. This was very valuable advice for the budding photographers. The prize winner of the Canon Powershot G7X was Pippa McGrath in Year 9 (pictured below with her winning entry).

Interact Club

This term we have officially launched The Forest High School Interact Club. Interact clubs bring together young people aged 12-18 to develop leadership skills through initiating and managing projects to support the community.

The Forest High School Interact Club is sponsored by the Belrose Rotary Club. Our students will work to organise at least two projects every year, one that helps their school or community and one that promotes international understanding. Rotary Club sponsors mentor and guide Interactors as they carry out projects and develop leadership skills. We have already begun working on our first project supporting Bear Cottage. Interact members have been assisting Rotary in collecting from the community at the Borgnis Street Christmas lights display. Since its beginning in 2006, it has raised over $215,000 for Bear Cottage. We are very proud to have our new Interact Club members there to assist. Our club members are very keen to begin rolling out new projects and a range of projects have been discussed for including in our program for 2018.

2017 Bob Walton Memorial Prize

Congratulations to Luke Brown from Year 9 who has been awarded the 2017 Bob Walton Memorial Prize for Outstanding Sporting Achievement Award for the Forest High School.

The Bob Walton Awards are named after a long serving supporter of the school who operated a local business at Forestville. This award is sponsored by Premer Health and Fitness. It is our school's most prestigious Sporting Award and Luke has been selected in recognition of his achievements in baseball, most notably representing Australia in the U15s Baseball side that went to the World Boys Tournament in the USA.

Luke will receive this well-deserved award at Presentation Night this evening.

2017 Caltex Best All-Rounder

We are pleased to announce that Year 12 student Ella Kasmar has been awarded The Forest High School's 2017 Caltex Best Allrounder Award, one of Australia's most prestigious secondary school prizes.

After a presentation and band performance in the hall they enjoyed a morning of activities around the school including science, TAS, music and visual arts. We are looking forward to these students becoming part of The Forest community in January.

We are pleased to announce that Baden Kelly from Year 12 has been awarded the 2017 Pierre de Coubertin Award for The Forest High School.

This award recognises sporting achievements and the demonstration of those endeavours consistent with the aims of the Olympic movement. Baden has always been an enthusiastic all-rounder and is recognised for his participation and achievements in a wide range of sporting acivities during his time at The Forest High School.

More than 15,000 young Australians have received the award since its inception in 1993 including 2012 London Olympic Silver Medallists Kim Crow (Rowing), Jessica Fox (Canoe/Kayak) and Nina Curtis (Sailing).

We send our congratulations to Baden on this well-deserved award.

Cup Cakes 4 a Cure - 21/11/7

On Tuesday 21st November, The Forest High School held a fundraiser 'Cupcakes 4 a Cure' to support The Kids Cancer Project.

Students were very generous in donating a gold coin in the morning and then purchasing cupcakes at lunch. Overall, we raised $863.30! Our goal is to raise $1000 so we have set up an account online to donate.

Trivia Night - 16/11/17

On Thursday 16th November we held our annual Trivia Night and a great time was had by all.

Thanks to the SRC and our host Mr Floriano who made sure it was a successful and fun night. Team themes included road gangs, Harry Potter and sporting teams. It was wonderful to see two tables of our 2016 Year 12s, including the captains, and some of the 2016 HSC males arrived in tennis outfits, including skirts and wigs. They even brought in a table tennis table to sit at and had rackets and balls to decorate. It was lovely to see how they have changed in their year out from school and also that they made so much effort to come and support the school.

The winning table on the night were the HSIE Heroes, with the Year 11 Construction Team winning best dressed and runners-up the Tennis boys.

Year 9 Canberra Trip - 9/11/17

On 9th November 37 students from our Year 9 Elective History and Philosophy classes went on an overnight excursion to Canberra.

On the first day they visited the National Museum of Australia, toured the city sights by bus and finished the day at the Questacon by Night experience where they had the whole museum to themselves. The next day they explored the Australian War Memorial and the Mount Ainslie Lookout for great views of the city. It was an enjoyable and educational excursion for all those who went.

On Thursday 16th November four of our Year 10 students spent a day working on mathematical problems and puzzles with Eddie Woo and Adam Spencer.

Eddie Woo is the Head Teacher of Mathematics at Cherrybrook High School and the creator of Woo tune. His session explored the question "What is Mathematics?"

Adam Spencer is a bestselling mathematics author and TV/radio presenter and he challenged students and teachers with maths and logic puzzles from his new book, The Number Games.

In Week 4 Year 9 had an engaging few days undertaking Peer Support training

Students participated in activities that promoted leadership, self-reflection, assertiveness and cooperation. Monday afternoon also brought out their creativity with the challenge of creating a costume merely out of newspaper and masking tape. The fashion show that followed was an enjoyable time for students to showcase their talents and have a good laugh. Well done to Year 9 for showing respect, responsibility and personal best and a big thank you to the eight teachers that volunteered their time to facilitate the groups.

Step back in time for INXS at The Forest High School

On 25th October INXS band members attended our special school assembly which all students were able to attend.

Tim Farriss, Kirk Pengilly and Garry Gary Beers are former students of The Forest High School and the band are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year along with the 30th anniversary of their album KICK. It was a step back in time for them as they wandered around the school, visiting the science block where some of the band first met each other and the music department where they jammed with some of our talented music students including Ariel from Year 12 who sang with the band. "It was an amazing experience to play with these legends. To be put on the spot and showcase my talent was spectacular" Ariel said after her performance.

The visit was filmed by Tara Brown and a TV crew from 60 Minutes and will be aired soon.

Northern Beaches Hospital helipad visit

In recognition of the anticipated opening of the Northern Beaches Hospital in one year members of the SRC, our Principal, Deputies and some teachers were invited to take part in a celebratory photo shoot on Monday 23rd October.

After donning safety gear they went to the rooftop helipad to admire the fantastic views, then posed for a drone to snap their picture. Also included were nursing staff and those involved in the construction works.

Global Dignity Day - 20th October 2017

On Friday 20th October two of our Year 10 students - Elizabeth R. and Emma D. - attended the Global Dignity Day at Parliament House.

They heard an inspiring talk by Animata Conteh-Biger, first Sierra Leonean woman refugee on Australia and her work to help her homeland. SBS made a documentary on her earlier this year that can be viewed by searching for "Daughter of Sierra Leone". Following the keynote address the girls worked with other schools discussing the issue of dignity for all.

Young Adult Short Story Writing Workshop

On Thursday 19th October, six students from Year 9 and 10 along with Ms Anwar, attended the Young Adult Short Story Writing Workshop at HarperCollins Publishers on Elizabeth Street in the CBD.

The day included presentations by 'P is for Pearl' author Eliza Henry Jones and 'Remind me how this ends' author Gabrielle Tozer; two flourishing Australian authors who spoke of their careers and imparted students with helpful advice on creative writing. Students also had behind the scenes access to the book cover design process, marketing and sales. It was a delight for them to be invited to such an event at such a reputable company and treated to an incredible view of the city!

The Induction Assembly was held on Wednesday 11th October for the incoming Student Representative Council members for 2018

After an extensive election process at the end of Term 3 the new Council are brimming with new ideas and plans for next year. Our 2018 Captain and Prefect body are already proving to be outstanding leaders - discussions already underway for new directions for the student body. The second Thursday of September each year is R U OK Day, a day in which we are all reminded to have meaningful conversations with others about mental health - conversation which can be initiated by simply asking others if they are OK.

The lunchtime stall by Headspace was very popular and all students had the opportunity to contribute to the colourful handprint mural. Headspace offers help and support for young people in person, online or over the phone. www.headspace.org.au

They were treated to a fascinating and inspiring keynote speaker, Associate Professor Lilong Bandler, followed by a Q&A session with three female MPs. Plus a great opportunity to watch Parliament in action, including a fiery debate in the Legislative Council.

Year 5 Archaeology Enrichment

The Greenhouse Project

Year 8 students are participating in a STEM sustainability project, examining the problem of feeding the burgeoning population.

One possible solution is the use of greenhouses, which may allow for continued food production in the face of climate change event or disease outbreaks. Working mainly with recyclable materials, students have constructed portable greenhouses and have planted various seeds of their own choice. Our students have been busy at work with their constructions and plantings and are eagerly awaiting the fruits of their labour!

Year 8 students Zoe, Ingrid, Amelia and Sophie together with Ms Yam from our Science Department, represented our school on 22nd August at the Rotary Interact Conference held at the Aerial UTS Function Centre.

This conference brings together high school student leaders, from Sydney and beyond, for a day of personal development, teambuilding and networking. The theme was "Serving Humanity" and the day included an impressive lineup of speakers and activities. We thank the girls for their exemplary representation of our school at this event.

Congratulations to our Year 11 students Zane, Kyffin and Nathan who won 1st prize in the Transport NSW Short Film Competition.

The topic was Young Driver Safety and their film "Distractions" came first in the state. They were presented with their certificates and ipads by Ben Lowe, Community Engagement Officer Transport NSW at yesterday's assembly. Seussical Musical

Year 7 and our senior VET Entertainment students attended the Seussical musical at The Glen Street Theatre on Thursday 3rd August.

This musical is about being yourself, not changing who you are, resilience and developing self-confidence.

It combines a live orchestra with paid professionals and students from the Conservatorium of Music, circus, dance, drama and singing.

It was very much enjoyed by all.

Education Week 2017

Education Week was celebrated at The Forest High School today with a parent tour and morning tea.

Parents were shown around the school to see the new painting that has been done to the buildings, new room refurbishments and the new all-purpose games court as well as visiting classrooms to see students learning in a variety of subjects.

Year 12 music students Will and Candy performed for the parents and our Year 10 Baristas provided delicious coffee from Café de Forest.

The themes of Education Week are:

Creating stronger ties with local communities

These themes were demonstrated with a photo display showing our students and staff engaged in various activities.

Lachlan Scheffers - off to South Korea to play for Manly United

Congratulations to Lachlan Scheffers of Year 11 who will be travelling to South Korea with his club, Manly United, for soccer in the KFL Youth Tournament during August.

Whilst there he will be competing against top quality clubs from around Europe and Asia which will be a tremendous experience and we wish him all the best with this great opportunity to improve and develop his talent.

This tournament is being organised by the Korean Football League and is of International standard with teams competing from clubs such as Arsenal, Athletic Bilboa, Benfica, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Cerezo Osaka, Yokohama Marinos and three national Korean teams.

On 27th June Year 8 attended P+P+P+P maths enrichment day. During two periods they were taught new skills in a challenging and fun environment. All activities enhanced the student's ability to work mathematically and to work as part of a team. There were many winners on the day and lots of chocolate prizes.

The students also watched a recent maths inspired movie "Hidden Figures". The maths teachers who attended were very impressed with the involvement and effort shown by all students. Thank you also to the Year 10 markers who practised their teacher skills.

Brett Whiteley Studio visit - 14th June 2017

Students from the HSC Visual Arts class attended an excursion to the Brett Whiteley studio, Art Gallery of NSW and Museum of Contemporary Art.

This was part of a case study on Brett Whiteley and Exhibition practice.

Girls Get Active Day

The Girls Get Active Day was held at Rat Park on Thursday 22nd June.

This was attended by 25 enthusiastic Year 7 sportswomen who met with some top Australian sportswomen in the sport of netball, surf lifesaving, football, cricket, hockey and rugby sevens followed by a morning of sporting tasters in 6 different sports.

Yr 11/12 Meditation & Relaxation Workshop

All Year 11 and 12 students are invited to a meditation and relaxation workshop on 14th June from 12.30pm to 2.00pm at the school.

The workshop will be fun by Neural Meditation and is funded by the Northern Beaches Hospital as an initiative to assist senior students to deal with exam and study stress.

Congratulations to Tash Huckstep in Year 9 who has just written a 43,000 word novel "Nobody Likes a Joker"

The book will be published by Amazon and will also be available on Kindle and Lulu.

The novel is a mystery fantasy romance set in 19th-century England and is about a 14 year old girl who is going through a family drama. Tash is now working on the sequel. We congratulate Tash on the great achievement.

Harmony Day is not just another day at school. It is a day when everyone can recognise the many cultures that are very much a part of Australia today.

Tuesday 21st March saw The Forest High School celebrate the cultural diversity in our school that means such a lot to all of our students. The SRC, teachers and students alike contributed to plan a day to remember.

Bullying No Way Day! is also recognised on this day and our school leaders bought some statistics and coping strategies to the attention of the whole school body during the two assemblies held on the day. These assemblies were introduced by our International Representatives Estee and Natalie and organised by the SRC Executive.

Since 1992, school communities across Australia have demonstrated their support for caring for the environment through participating in Schools Clean Up Australia Day.

Year 7 students participated during their Period 5 class last Friday 10th March - the official day is 3rd March but we postponed due to the rain

The school was cleaned of rubbish and for their efforts they were rewarded with a treat.

Edison Zhang receives International Students Award

Our Year 12 Dux for 2016, Edison Zhang, has been honoured with the award from the NSW Department of Education for academic achievement.

Edison received his award at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music last month. Edison now plans to study Engineering or Law in Sydney.

Mr Rob Stokes, the Minister for Education, said that the student awards ceremony "recognises the outstanding achievements of our international students and celebrates the contributions made to our school communities"

VET Construction & Hospitality Work Placement

Over the past two weeks our Construction and Hospitality students have been undertaking work placement in order to develop the skills they have been learning in the classroom

The hospitality students have worked in the kitchens in a variety of large hotels, restaurants and cafes. These have included Amora Hotel, Mercure Sydney, Pullman Sydney at Hyde Park, Garfish, Pilu, Miramere and Manly Pavilion, to name a few.

The construction students were also given the opportunity to put their skills into practice at places such as David Ferrai Construction and Bracor Developments

Year 7 students at their Swim & Surf School recently held at Manly Pool and Long Reef beach.

Thank you to the Year 10 students for their assistance as instructors. Year 7s undertook the Royal Life Saving Society's Swim & Survive Awards and Level 2 Surf Awareness/Surf Skills Program. They participated in a series of activities including an endurance swim, water skills, a survival swim and theory work which covered safety and personal survival techniques, resuscitation, basic first aid and surf awareness. A great day was had by all!

Recent media reports regarding The Forest High School

The Draft Northern Beaches Structure Plan endorsed recently by Northern Beaches Council will be subject to a public consultation process early in 2017 by Council. The Draft Structure Plan identifies both The Forest High School and Frenchs Forest Public School as part of a potential town centre in the future. The Department of Education will continue to work with Council through the exhibition process and involve the local schools' leadership. If, after the land use planning process, the Council, in conjunction with other government agencies, considers that The Forest High School site should at some stage be rezoned, the Department of Education will consider its options.

The Department will work with the local school community through any potential future redevelopments in accordance with its standard practices. The community can be assured that the school will continue to exist on the current site, irrespective of any zoning, unless and until a new school is constructed or appropriate transitional arrangements are in place. Any newly constructed school would need to be within a short distance from the current site and would aim to provide significantly improved school facilities that meet long-term enrolment demands.

Photography excursion to Sun Studios

The Forest High School photography students attended an excursion to Sun Studios in Alexandria for the presentation of the winner of the photography competition sponsored by Canon on 21st November 2016.

Students had to submit a photo showing the concept of freedom. Year 10 student Amy Na was the winner of a Canon camera valued at $700. The General Manager of Sun Studios, Alan Brightman, took students on a tour of the studios, including one studio where there was a photo shoot in progress, provided morning tea and gave a short talk about photography as a career. He also provided the judge's comments about each photo and suggested ways of improving on the photos, which was invaluable to the students. All those who attended thought it was a really invaluable excursion and provided them with an insight into the world of photography.

Our photo shows Alan Brightman presenting the Canon camera to Forest High School photography teacher Ms Fiona Livingstone, who accepted the prize on behalf of Amy Na who was unable to attend on the day.

Bob Walton Memorial Prize

Harlan Mulherin from Year 12 has been awarded the Bob Walton Memorial Prize for Outstanding Sporting Achievement Award for The Forest High School

The Bob Walton Awards are named after a long serving supporter of the school who operated a local business at Forestville. This award is sponsored by Premier Health and Fitness. It is our school's most prestigious Sporting award and Harlan has been selected in recognition of his outstanding achievements in athletics, particularly steeplechase, and his commitment to his running. He recently competed and was placed 1st at the NSW All Schools Athletics Championships in the 2000m U19 Steeplechase.

Harlan will receive this well-deserved award at the Graduation Ceremony on 24th November and we send him our congratulations.

Luke Reid named 2016 Caltex Best All Rounder

We are pleased to announce that Year 12 student Luke Reid has been awarded the school's 2016 Caltex Best All Rounder Award, one of Australia's most prestigious secondary school prizes.

Media reports regarding possible school relocation

There have been media reports over the weekend about the possible relocation of The Forest High School.

The Department of Education has been consulted by the Department of Planning and Northern Beaches Council (formerly Warringah Council) during drafting of Council's Draft Northern Beaches Hospital Precinct Structure Plan.

The Department is planning for educational facilities for all the schools in the area to meet enrolment demand and provide quality educational facilities, taking into account the impact of potential dwelling increase stemming from the Council's plan.

If Northern Beaches Council, in conjunction with other government agencies, considers that The Forest High School site should at some stage be rezoned, the Department of Education will consider its options.

The Department believes there is no educational need to relocate the school or rezone the land.

As this process progresses, we will continue to update the community.

Uniform Shop Extra Hours

The Uniform Shop will be open on Monday afternoons from 2.00pm until 4.00pm starting Monday 14th November 2016 until Monday 12th December 2016 as well as the regular morning shift.

During the school holidays the uniform shop will be open on Saturday 28th January 2017 from 8.00am until 12.00pm.

On Monday 30th January 2017 the Uniform Shop will be open from 8.00am until 1.00pm

2017 Student Representative Council inaugurated

Elections for 2017 have just been completed and we have our new leadership team for the upcoming year.

Students underwent an interview with senior executive followed by speeches and voting. This year our candidates had to complete an additional speech to the whole staff body at an after school meeting. Our new Captains are already busy working on what direction they wish to take the SRC in 2017.

The Student Representative Council Inauguration Assembly was held on Wednesday 21st September where our incoming members were introduced in front of teachers, students and parents. Congratulations to all who stood - the speeches were to be commended from all candidates and best wishes to our new Captains in their new roles.

We thank the SRC of 2016 for their wonderful service to the school this year. The outgoing Year 12 SRC have been committed Forest students throughout their time at the school - always involved in all activities and excelling in their chosen areas.

Students have developed fundamental drawing and painting skills working across a range of still life subjects, including tea cakes and skulls! These works were entered and exhibited at the Mosman Youth Art Prize.

The Forest High Schoool Junior Band and Wind Ensemble put on excellent performances at the NSWEE Spring Music Festival on Sunday.

The Festival was held at the Concourse Theatre in Chatswood. Both ensembles were conducted by our resident conductor Lemin Luu. The festival showcased more than 50 bands from the Northern Sydney region and is recognised as one of Sydney's premier celebrations of student achievement in wind ensemble performances.

Thankfully the sun shone and it was a great day for it. This was a wonderful collaboration between the two schools and congratulations to the winners - the Tesla Nano team. There were some very creative and innovative designs from the students.

Mufti Day - Friday 9th September

On this Friday 9th September the school will be holding a whole school mufti day. Students wearing mufti are asked to bring a gold coin donation which will be collected at roll call.

Money collected on Friday will be used to assist Year 12 with their end of school year activities.

A sausage sizzle is also being planned at lunch time on Friday.

Our annual Trivia Night is back so please come along tomorrow night Wednesday 31st August 2016 at 7.00pm. This is a fun night, totally organised and run by the students.

The Student Representative Council are currently collecting prizes and would appreciate any donations for the night. A thank you to those parents who have already donated wonderful prizes. A rolling raffle will be held on the night. Please contact the school or drop prizes to the library if you can help.

Please book your table as soon as possible for a great night of trivia and fun. The Student Representative Council look forward to seeing you there. API Solar Car Challenge

The API Solar Car Challenge, hosted by The Forest High School, is nearing competition day on the 23rd August.

The challenge, which encompasses a speed race, an endurance run, a hill climb and best-looking vehicle, will be keenly fought between seven Forest High School teams, four from Beacon Hill Public School and three from Allambie Heights Public School.

Both primary schools hae been visited by staff and students from The Forest High School, offering assistance and guidance, and from these visits it is obvious they are up to the challenge. We look forward to hosting them on the day.

The teams are currently in their final days of design and testing, ensuring their vehicles can meet the various challenges and showcasing their engineering and design capabilities.

Just a reminder that this Friday 5th August is the closing date for the Year 8 into 9 Web Choices.

it is now time for Year 8 students to choose their electives for Years 9 and 10. All students in Years 9 and 10 study English, Mathematics, Science, HSIE (History/Geography/Civics) and PDHPE. In addition, students are required to complete three electives. Every effort will be made to ensure that the majority of students receive their choices.

Please discuss the choices with your son/daughter. It is important that they select subjects in which they are interested, and are capable of doing. We endeavour to give all students their choices. However, this is not always possible so please have a reserve subject in mind.

Please note that some electives carry a fee which is outlined in the information booklet (click on link below). These fees are mandatory as they cover consumables used in these elective subjects.

Music Recital Night

Congratulations to Sophie Beukers, Anna Gao and Luke Reid for a stunning music recital last night. These three senior students peformed a very rigorous and expert programme of six pieces each as part of their Music 2 Extension HSC course. Congratulations also to the CAPA Department particularly Melissa Yea and James Moore who have been expert teachers and mentors for these very talented students.

White Ribbon morning tea

A morning tea was held at the school last Friday to raise funds for White Ribbon. Cakes and savouries were on sale - some had been prepared by TAS students and others donated by students and staff. The Barista Cafe de Forest was also open for delicious coffee. All funds raised are to be donated to the White Ribbon cause.

White Ribbon is Australia's only national, male-led campaign to end men's violence against women. Their vision is that all women live in safety free from all forms of men's violence and their mission is making women's safety a man's issue too. The campaign works through primary prevention intitiatives involving awareness raising and education, and programs with youth, schools, workplaces and across the broader community.

Globally, White Ribbon is the world's largest male-led movement to end men's violence against wome. Originating in Canada in 1991, White Ribbon is now active in more than 60 countries. In 2003, White Ribbon was brought to Australia by UNIFEM (now UN Women).

We thank all those involved in making the morning tea such a success.

The time line for the selection process is as follows:

Tuesday 26th July 2016 - Information Night at Forest High School - 7pm in the Hall. On this night all parents and students are invited to attend to talk to Head Teachers of each faculty to answer any questions or queries. A detailed information booklet and subject selection sheet will be given to parents and students attending the information night.

Friday 5th August 2016 - Final date for the subject selection process. Please discuss the choices with your son/daughter. Hospital and Roads Update

We are continuing to meet regularly with representatives from the Northern Beaches Hospital Project and Ferrovial York, the contractor that is undertaking the road works on behalf of RMS. Our school continues to benefit from our partnership with the hospital. Recently Deborah Latta, Northern Beaches Hospital Project, Project Director, visited our school to do a presentation on the hospital project for all of Year 7. Our students were highly engaged and asked a number of very perceptive questions about the construction and planning of the hospital. The presentation was to support a unit of work Year 7 students are undertaking in English. Students are writing and illustrating picture books on healing that could be used to entertain and reassure children who are hospitalised. This is part of our English and CAPA cross faculty literacy project. The books are to be explained, presented and finally donated to the Northern Beaches Hospital for therapeutic use with patients. All of us thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and we thank Deborah Latta and the Northern Beaches Hospital Project team for their ongoing support of the school.

2016 Kokoda Trek PNG Essay Competition

Eliza Jacobsen in Year 10 won the Manly Warringah War Memorial Park Remembrance Trust 2016 Kokoda Trek PNG Essay Competition. 11 schools submitted entries so the process was quite competitive. Eliza was successful and the Trust announced her as the winner at the Manly Dam ANZAC ceremony. Eliza will be accompanying students from Cherrybrook High School to PNG to complete the trek in the July school holidays. We congratulate Eliza and look forward to hearing about her experience.

NSWCHS Girls Softball

On the 21st-22nd June The Forest High School Girls Softball team travelled to Newcastle to participate in the NSW Combined High Schools Girls Softball Carnival. Over the two days we played schools from all around the state.

Our first round game was against Macintyre High School, winning convincingly and advancing us into the cup side of the draw where we would be playing off for a top eight spot. Our second game was against the other North Sydney team in the competition, Mackellar Girls, losing the game to finish off our first day of competition with a win and a loss.

The second day saw us come up against Engadine High School, with the girls going down 5-7 in a very close game. Our last game was against Callaghan College where we came away winners, putting in an excellent performance to win 14-1! After completing all round games, the girls placed seventh overall which is an excellent achievement. All players represented the school in an exceptional manner and played very well over the two days.

Young Men's Health Forum

A group of 15 boys attended The Young Men's Health Forum at Chatswood on Friday 10th June. The forum created a place for boys from school all around Sydney to engage in conversation surrounding difficult topics concerning young men. Inspirational speakers included Peter Overton, Peter Fitzsimmons, Sophie Ryan and Kathy Kelly.

Kathy Kelly is the mother of Thomas Kelly. Thomas was a victim of alcohol-fuelled violence in 2012. He lost his life at the age of 18 after being king hit in an unprovoked attack. Kathy gave an extremely powerful presentation, one that affected everyone in the room resulting in the realization of the severity of the consequence and the impact on Thomas' family, friends and community.

The forum was aimed specifically at Year 10 boys as recent statistics show 1 in 4 men have a mental health issue but only 13% seek help. Another shocking statistic is that suicide is the biggest killer of men aged between 15-24 years. The main message on the day was that it is OK to discuss mental health issues. Being able to show your vulnerabilities is showing strength not weakness. We need to support young people to speak out and change the stigma behind mental health.

Boys Baseball win

API Solar Car Challenge

As one of only 10 schools chosen across Australia, The Forest High School will be participating in the 2016 API Solar Car Challenge during Science Week this August.

The event is sponsored by The Australian Power Institute and supported by STELR (Science and Technology Leveraging Relevance), which is a national initiative of the Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE). ATSE is an independent body of more than 800 Australian scientists and engineers seeking to enhance Australia's prosperity through technological innovation.

The primary aim of STELR is to address the problem of low participation rates in science and mathematics. With this in mind we have over 80 students across all year groups signed up to the Solar Car Challenge.

Over the next two months these students, supported by volunteer teachers, will design and build their own solar car in time to compete in a series of races and challenges during Science Week. This is an exciting challenge engaging students across multiple disciplines including science, maths, TAS and the creative arts.

The Forest High School also hopes to share our experiences with local primary schools thus supporting our STEM program.

Exchange student back for a visit

The Forest High School had a welcome visitor last month when one of our exchange students from 2009-10 came back to visit. Otavio Taube Toretta was at our school for a year and had such a great time he wanted to come back and say thank you. Otavio is now studying law and was in Sydney for a conference. He enjoyed having a look around the school and seeing all the changes. He met up with some teachers he remembered such as Ms Power and Ms Murray and thanked Ms McDowall for allowing him to visit.

Otavio said "Coming back to Forest High was an awesome moment to remember the time I had here back in 2009. I am grateful to all teachers for helping me and making my stay here more comfortable. They are great teachers and they worked very well with the different cultures. Thank you for the great year, Forest High."

Saltbush

Saltbush is a program that has been running for the last three years at The Forest High School. It originally began at Ryde Secondary College and was built around the premise of students and staff from a city school and the remote school at Bourke, exchanging visits in very different communities and schools.

The Forest High students who participated left Sydney on Tuesday 17th May and returned on Saturday 21st May travelling by train to Dubbo and then coach to Bourke. Bourke is a long way from Sydney, almost to the North West corner of NSW, close to the Queensland border. The school has less than 160 students with a large proportion of these students being of Aboriginal background. Many of the city students attending have never been further west than the Blue Mountains, so experiencing a very different landscape is a new experience in itself.

When at Bourke High School, our students were allocated classes to attend, and this year the groups experienced smaller classes, different learning strategies and organisation, and got to know students from the school. They also attended sport and school assembly. They were taken on a trip to Mt Oxley to view a magnificent sunset and on Friday visited Missy at Gundabooka National Park who is a person of the stone country and was able to engage the students in stories from the past and talk abut how past cultures sustained themselves in this rugged environment. The students also viewed ancient rock art said to be 40,000 years old. Teachers participated in all of the activities and were also allocated to classes to work with the Bourke students and learn about a very different community and how it functions.

Bourke High School teachers and students will come on a return visit to our school in early August, where they will attend classes and be involved in a tour of Macquarie University. For these students it may be the first time they have experienced a large school community as well as a university campus.

Games Club

Chiba Keiai Visit

The Languages Department was very excited to have our sister school Chiba Keiai visit us once again in March.

We were privileged to have the new Principal of Chiba Keiai join us, Mr Masayuki Takaoka. It has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm from our students learning Japanese from Years 9 to 10 in meeting and interacting with them. Many students practiced their Japanese with the Chiba Keiai visitors and exchanged cultural information and have vowed to stay in touch via social media so that they can continue learning from one another.

The visit to Taronga Zoo with the homestay families was a great success. The Japanese visitors had never seen a koala or emu before and were fascinated by the interactive lemur tour. They also enjoyed the interactive Japanese classes whereby our students participated with one another in learning new grammar and participating in group activities. Chiba Keiai students could not stop crying for a while on the bus on their way back to Japan after saying goodbye to our students. We thank all the homestay host families for their kindness and enthusiasm in allowing their Japanese students to stay with them for one week. Every Keiai student was delighted to spend their days with their host families.

We look forward to our sister school coming back next year!

International Women's Day Breakfast

Parents, staff and students attended an International Women's Day Breakfast on Tuesday 8th March at The Forest High School to celebrate the successes of women past and present and to make a commitment to eliminate violence against women.

The funds raised will be donated to support the United Nations Women's work to transform the lives of women and children.

The guest speaker was Krystal Barter, who set up the Pink Hope website to help families affected by genetic cancer. Krystal is a local woman and her published book, "The Lucky Ones" was promoted by a Forest Coach Lines bus being painted pink.

Harmony Day

On Friday 18th March we celebrated Harmony Day and Bullying No Way Day. Students were asked to wear a piece of orange with their school uniform in recognition that at The Forest High everyone belongs. At lunchtime there was pizza, a BBQ, gelato, cakes and Thai for sale and an afternoon assembly was held with student presentations and performances.

Careers Advisers Day

On Friday 19th February Ms Cathy Thompson Deputy Principal and Mr Chris Mansell our Careers Adviser attended the annual Careers Advisers Day at Sydney University. Each year Sydney University and other universities in Sydney organise days so that they can let school communities know of new innovations in their organisation, new and re-designed courses as well as a range of opportunities for student admissions. This event was held in the brand new Nano-Science Building on the Sydney University campus, and is a state of the art building purpose-designed for research as well as education. Many faculties delivered presentations and held Q&A sessions. Students should speak to Mr Mansell if they have specific questions about courses available in 2017, entry requirements and scholarships on offer.

RMS Work on School and Roads

Ferrovial York Joint Venture, the contractor who is doing the road works, has commenced some work on school grounds. Our front fence was moved over the school holidays in alignment with the property adjustment and the work on that section of Frenchs Forest Road will commence shortly. Some of the work on the school grounds will commence in the next couple of months (the car park behind A Block and the new multi-purpose games court) and the improvements to the other two car parks (the front and western car parks) will commence in the December/January holidays at the end of the year. With the assistance of RMS, we will be holding some safety talks with the students shortly.

On Friday 5th February a group of four Year 10 Engineering students - Jasper Schwarz, Andy Pataki, Sophie Jukes and Amy Sheppard - plus Stephen Davies, Head Teacher TAS and our Principal Rosemary McDowall, visited the Northern Beaches Hospital site. Mike Baird, Jillian Skinner and Jonathan O'Dea were present along with Deborah Latta, the Healthscope Project Manager and Anthony Armstrong, Site Manager as well as other site officers and government officials. Ms McDowall and Sophie Jukes placed their hands in a wet cement plaque along with the Premier, the Ministers and Deborah Latta. The plaque will be engraved with their names and will be placed in the hospital garden. The Premier and Health Minister were very interested in the school's partnership with the new hospital. The students were extremely excited and asked astute questions.

Swimming Carnival

The 2016 annual Forest High swimming carnival was a great success. The enthusiasm from each and every swimmer was shown throughout the day with great participation and students feeling comfortable in having a go.

The support of the house captains, fellow senior students and the crowd gave encouragement to those students competing and brightened up the mood in the stands. The Year 12's got everyone motivated with Mexican waves, chanting and cheering and the seniors, decked out in fluoro colours and dress ups, waited patiently all day for the muck-up race in the 50m butterfly at the end of the carnival.

A big mention should go to the house captains for their help in organising their houses, the relays and supporting the students to cheer and swim throughout the day.

Congratulations to all competitors and participants, those who are going on to zone carnivals and also the Age Champions of 2016. A big thank you also to all the teachers for their time and help throughout the day.

Opal Card issues

History Discovery Day

In November The Forest High School ran a History Discovery Day for Year 5 students at Allambie Heights and Wakehurst Public Schools organised through the History Transition Team. Its aim was to strengthen the continuum of ideas, concepts and skills from Stage 3 History into Stage 4 History, culminating in a day specifically designed for Year 5 students.

The Year 5 students came to the school and experienced a number of activities focusing on ancient Greece. They participated in an archaeological dig and uncovered artefacts that represented ancient Greek theatre tickets, broken vases and small oil lamps.

The students also donned togas and created plays based on the Greek Gods. The final activity was a research session on the ancient Greek Olympic Games.

All the activities were run by enthusiastic Year 10 Philosophy students and the day would not have been possible without their assistance.

A big thank you for the Year 5 teachers from Allambie Heights and Wakehurst Public Schools for their participation in the day and especially Mr Mitchell and Mr Wootton, who were part of the History Transition Team.

School Bus Number Changes

These changes will not impact the level of service provided to the school or the route taken by these services.

Minister's Award for Excellence in Student Achievement

Brandon Egan-Walters, School Captain, received the Minister's Award for Excellence in Student Achievement on Tuesday 15th September at Parliament House, Sydney. The Honourable Adrian Piccoli MP, NSW Minister for Education and Dr Michele Bruniges AM, Secretary of the NSW Department of Education attended and presented the awards.

This prestigious award recognises outstanding achievements in academic performance, leadership and contribution to the school community. Receiving this award is a significant achievement for Brandon and we offer our warm congratulations.

21st Century Classroom

In 2014 The Forest High School teaching staff commenced a whole school focus on teaching 21st century fluencies, which are "structured processes for developing the essential skills students need to succeed today and in the future". They include solution fluency - problem-solving; information fluency - data skills; creativity fluency; media fluency; collaboration fluency and global digital citizenship.

Concurrently our BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policy was implemented for students in Years 7 to 10 in recognition of the need to provide students and teachers with flexible access to technology in all key learning areas.

The Forest High School also recognised a need for flexible learning spaces for both students and teachers - areas which were not restricted by the constraints of traditional classrooms. We have two 21st century learning spaces - one in the library and one in the newly refurbished common room. The design of these spaces was grounded in educational research, providing interactive technology and modular furniture to give a flexible layout and to promote collaborative learning.

Student and teacher feedback has been extremely positive, providing an environment that is inspiring and fosters creativity. The learning spaces have a significant positive impact on student engagement

Australian Mathematics Competition

The Forest High School entered 60 students in the 38th annual Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). Hundreds of thousands of students in primary and secondary schools from around 30 countries sat the AMC on 30th July. The AMC is a major school mathematics event encompassing an enrichment and problem-solving program. The AMC aims to promote the practical application of mathematics in an enjoyable way to the average student, often uncovering talent not seen in regular classroom tests. Students from Year 3 to Year 12 compete on the same day, making it one of the largest single events on the Australian education calendar and tests everything from basic numeracy skills through to advanced problem-solving.

Of the 60 students from the Forest High School:

1 received a Certificate of High Distinction
7 obtained a Distinction
26 achieved a Credit
23 received a Proficiency Certificate

All other students who competed received a Certificate of Participation and every entrant is provided with an individual performance work.

We would like to congratulate all these students on their participation and encouraging results.

Leadership Seminar

The Forest High School was excited to present a leadership seminar on Wednesday 14th October in our new learning centre. The event was run in conjunction with Health Infrastructure and Healthscope and the presenters were some of the senior executives in charge of the hospital project next to the school. The event was open to all students 7-12 and we had a great response from enthusiastic students who were more than happy to give up their afternoon to attend the valuable seminar. Feedback from students and the presenters was overwhelmingly positive and we look forward to offering more opportunities for rich and authentic learning as a result of our collaboration with Healthscope.

Write 4 Fun! English Writing Competion

Term Three's busy competitions schedule has proved to be successful for The Forest High School's diligent and capable English students. Write 4 Fun! announced that The Forest High School has 10 student entries who are progressing into the next round of their writing competition for 2015. Write for Fun! recognised the Forest High School with a Certificate of Excellence for outstanding writing. The competition received over 9000 entries, so this award is a real 'feather in the cap' for our students.

In addition, one staff entry, Mr Falkland, and 64 student entries have been recognised for their participation in the red Room Poetry Competition for 2015.

2015 Caltex Best All Rounder Award

Congratulations to Holly Mason in Year 12 who has been named as The Forest High School's recipient of the 2015 Caltex Best All Rounder Award, one of Australia's most prestigious secondary school prizes. Holly joins a select group of secondary students around Australia who have received a Caltex Best All Rounder Award for excellence in their studies, on the sportsfield and for their work in the community.

Now in its 30th year, this award is one of Australia's best-loved secondary education recognition programs and has been presented to thousands of final-year students, acknowledging their all-round contributions to their schools and communities.

State Tennis Championships

The State Tennis Championships were recently held from 27th to 29th October at District Park Tennis Courts Newcastle, with players competing for the Alan Basford Shield.

The Forest High School Year 10 student Alex Turner was playing for a third consecutive year representing Sydney North who won for a third year in a row with a 7-5 matches win.

Alex won all his singles and doubles matches playing at No.3 and 4, including a 6-0 singles win in the final. Alex received a medallion, Merit Team Award and 3 year selection Bronze Certificate.

Congratulations to Alex on this great achievement.

Rollover and New Timetable

Rollover to the new academic year is on Monday 9th November. Rollover means all year groups progress to the next year eg: Year 7 becomes Year 8 on Monday 9th November. This change is to ensure that 3+3 students studying to their HSC in the compacted curriculum model meet the BOSTES requirements for senior study.

New timetable and bell times. On 9th November the Forest High School is moving to a 5 period day. Each period will be 60 minutes and will replace the 4 period day of 75 minutes. This change has occurred after consultation with staff at the school, the SRC as well as with members of the P&C.

Students will be issued with their new timetable which will reflect these changes.
